Resume
Vânia Maia began her career in local radio but found her true voice in print journalism. Her feature stories have earned more than a dozen distinctions, including the Lorenzo Natali Prize, promoted by the European Commission, and she has been nominated for the True Story Award 2025. She was selected for the 2024 European Collaborative Journalism Programme, focused on collaborative investigative journalism and developed by Arena for Journalism in Europe and the Toepfer Foundation, and has received grants from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Journalismfund Europe. Additionally, she was selected to participate in specialized training on Effective Reporting on Migration, organized by the European Excellence Exchange in Journalism and COPEAM. Maia has experience as a teacher, speaker, moderator, and award jury member. Her reporting has taken her from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to refugee camps in Uganda and cyclone-devastated regions of Mozambique. Now a freelancer, university lecturer, and PhD candidate in Communication Sciences, she is working on her first non-fiction book.
