The PhD in Media Art and Communication promotes training and research in the fields of media art and creative industries. It aims to train researchers, artists and professionals to critically explore the vast array of objects and practices covered by current cultural and creative industries. This PhD program fosters applied artistic research through lab courses dedicated to cinema and sound, immersive and interactive technologies, digital curation, as well as theory and criticism. The course plan allows the monitoring of each student in the structuring of the thesis since the 1st academic year, while the 2nd and 3rd years are exclusively dedicated to the thesis research and writing. The doctoral thesis can be developed either as a monograph, as a project or from research papers published in indexed journals. • Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

The EC's main learning objective is to acquire knowledge about contemporary relations between the media, the arts and culture and communication, reflecting on the multiple ways in which media technologies continue to materially recombine and to be reinvented in multiple industrial contexts, cultural and transnational. Today media studies must confront the media as objects in constant transformation and mutation that proliferate in our societies and influence the ways in which they are structured. This requires analytical skills and the ability to read these processes critically, placing the process of creation, reception and adoption in broader contexts, such as those of digitization or globalization / glocalization. This implies creatively exploring theoretical, technical and aesthetic tools, in order to develop a theoretical and applied device capable of critically exploring the aesthetic properties of media environments.

  • Research

    Research

The PhD in Media Art and Communication focuses on the contemporary relationships between media, arts and culture, reflecting on the multiple combinations of media technologies in different cultural contexts. To this end, the PhD program combines its theoretical and practical aspects with research carried out at the Research Center for Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies (CICANT) at Universidade Lusófona, allowing its students to integrate ongoing research projects or other activities related to their research interests. The fact that CICANT has a thematic line of research dedicated to ¿Media Arts, Creative Industries and Technologies¿ promotes this articulation with the work carried out by PhD students. This broad and diversified training will allow the PhD student to creatively explore theoretical, technical and aesthetic tools that can be applied to the most diverse mediatized environments.
