Presentation
The fundamental principles, concepts and bases for the design of structural elements in reinforced concrete (columns, tension members, beams and slabs) are introduced in the curricular unit. The scientific and technical aspects of the analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures are discussed following the European standards (Eurocodes). The subjects introduced in the curricular unit Reinforced Concrete are essential to the formation of a civil engineer since important concepts to the professional activity, both in the areas of design and production (control and management of constructions), are introduced.

Introduction. Bases of design Introduction to Eurocodes 0 and 1. Types of loads and combination of loads. Material properties and RC durability Constitutive laws of the concrete and steel. Classes of concrete. Reinforcing steel. Composite behaviour of concrete and steel. Shrinkage and creep effects. Durability of structures. Cross-sections subjected to axial force and bending. Behaviour of cross-sections subjected to axial forces and of prestressed concrete sections. Sections subjected to uniaxial bending, uniaxial bending combined with axial force and biaxial bending. Shear and torsion Analysis of the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams. Safety evaluation in terms of shear resistance. Design and detailing of beams. Torsion combined with shear and with bending moment. Serviceability limit states Behaviour of structures under service load conditions. Service limit states of cracking and deformation. Columns and second-order effects

Objectives
Presentation of the principles, theories and models for the analysis and design of structural elements in reinforced concrete. Introduce the students to the structural eurocodes and discuss and apply the provisions of Eurocode 2 concerning the reinforced concrete. Introduce the students to the design of reinforced concrete structures.
