The Theory of Structures course succeeds other courses in Structures, in particular Statics of Structures from the 2nd year of LEC and introduces methods for solving statically and/or kinematically indeterminate structures. When designing Civil Engineering structures, it is necessary to quantify the internal forces the and displacements of the structure, cause by the normative actions, in order to compare them with the imposed limits. Hence, the methods for analyzing structures must be comprehended so that it is possible to determine the required stress and strain states.

Objectives
Objectives
The main objective of this course consists on the study of the behavior of frame structures, by application of the Force Method (FM) and the Displacements Method (DM) for calculating the internal forces. The students will increase their knowledge on the linear behavior of indeterminate structures. The students should be able to compute displacements in planar structures and solve indeterminate structures using two distinct methodologies (FM and DM). In this course will also be introduced some concepts on Kirchhoff’s theory of thin plates, so that the students become acquainted with the behavior of these type of structural element. The course is based on the knowledge previously acquired in the UC Statics of Structures, namely with regard to the calculation of internal forces diagrams.
