    The science of measurement as a field of knowledge applied to all measurements and measurement systems, has a transversal nature in all Engineering Specialties and relevance in engineering applications. It covers the realization, development, and maintenance of national standards for units of measurement; the establishment of metrological traceability by reference and work standards; the measurements evaluation of errors and uncertainty; monitoring instruments by their useful life, approval of measuring instruments for regulated applications. The improvement of skills in engineering and science teaching are essential factors to strengthen and support the research and the process development.

    1. The science of measurement: Basic concepts The subfields of metrology The International System of units, SI Metrological traceability Conformity assessment 2. Characteristics and analysis of instruments and measurement systems Linearity, accuracy, and stability evaluation Requirements applied to calibration certificates, metrological verification, and test reports Errors and uncertainty in measurement Measuring report 3. Metrological experimentation in engineering and digitalization in data acquisition and monitoring.

    Objectives

    This course aims at providing students with methodological and application skills in the context of the science of measurement. By applying the knowledge, the students must have acquired competencies on to identify the metrological concepts and translate their application according to the SI, certificates, and test reports analyzing, error and uncertainty evaluation, and novel approaches toward industrial engineering applications.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The teaching methodology is based on the presentation of the subjects and the resolution of exercises and practical cases, with the active participation of the students. The assessment of students is based on a test (70 %) and a mandatory seminary with oral presentation (30 %). In seminary, the students must develop an approach to the industrial metrological application learned within this curricular unit. Students are approved with a grade equal to or greater than 10. The student cannot be approved without developing and presenting the seminary.
