Objectives
Objectives
The goal is to acquaint students to the origins of Social Security Law, the different ways of conceiving a social protection model, and to study, in particular, the Portuguese social security system. In this context, students should understand the scope (and limits) of constitutional protection, as well as know the principles that guide the Portuguese social security system and its structure. They will then be capable to study and apply the legal regime of the different legal social security relationships. Apart from obtaining a theoretical basis, it is intended that students become able to solve practical situations. They will develop skills to understand the policies that underlie the different models of Social Security; know the basics of Portuguese Social Security system; perceive and frame the different systems, subsystems and social security schemes; know the main law that governs social protection in Portugal; solve practical issues.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The curricular unit will be teaching with a balance between theorical-practical exposition of topics by professor (presentation and discussion of the subjects and questions of the syllabus and their knowledge application) in the and dialogue with and between students. During classes students are encouraged to ask questions, give their opinion in relevant subjects, and participate in case-solving classes. Presenting assignments is also a very important learning tool. Students may choose to write an essay on a particular subject. A list of suggestions will be available, but students may choose a different subject. The professor will be available to discuss the subject choice.
