In the field of arts and architecture, guidance for the presentation of a work or set of works or works with an innovative character, accompanied by written reasoning that explains the process of conception and elaboration, the research capacity, and its framework in the evolution of the knowledge in the field in which it operates. The development of research work must contain new theories, new analyzes, new facts or, still, interrelate established facts and theories, so that the advance of knowledge can transform what is, apparently, inexplicable into a predictable result. The research work should be developed so that they are pertinent and relevant in relation to the issues raised, in addition to consolidating the project's arguments, including discussion of results and assessment of contribution to the state of the art.

The PhD in Architecture at Universidade Lusófona has implemented a close relationship between the University Centers of Lisbon and Porto. To this end, it organizes classes into separate face-to-face classes and joint online classes.
