Class Fundamentals of the Building Project

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The present curricular unit (UC) consists of a practical and project-based discipline where students are expected to carry out a project of a real building, taking into account the integration of several specialties: i) module of Architecture and Fire Safety, where general concepts on project coordination and on the Architecture and Fire Safety Data projects will be presented; ii) Structural Dimensioning module, where students will be given tutorial follow-up so that they can develop a resistant structure solution for the building to be studied; iii) Building Physics module, where the thermal and acoustic design of the building will be carried out; iv) Installations in Buildings module, where building water and wastewater drainage projects will be carried out. All modules will be based on the knowledge acquired in previous UC.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

It is intended that students develop, based on the set of teachings transmitted throughout the course, a unique project for a building to foster their capacities for initiative, autonomy, decision-making, and work organization. The aim of the course is to contribute to a practical understanding of the most common design procedures, seeking to instill methodological habits of effectiveness and quality control, which is the most effective way to reduce the risk associated with design activity. The student should develop skills to integrate the various specialties of the project, from the correct interpretation of the Architecture and Fire Safety projects, passing through the design of the resistant structure, and ending with the development of thermal and acoustic projects, as well as building network projects of water and wastewater drainage from a building.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

In the refered Curricular Unit, theoretical concepts will be linked with practical exercises. Collaboration among students and with the professor is encouraged during classes to work as a team in problem-solving. Students will be presented with topics and problems for the subsequent contextualization of the concepts in their projects. "Problem-Based Learning" (PBL) practices are highly valued in all classes of this specific Curricular Unit.
