This UC aims to provide the student with the following set of skills: - Identify opportunities to use endogenous resources to generate energy; - Project energy generation systems using endogenous resources; - Evaluate, technically, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects; - Perform technical/economic evaluation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects; - Know the energy consumption distribution among the different energy sectors; - Know the different etaps of an EA, their methodologies and goals; - Identify energy saving opportunities in different economic sectors; - Use economic indicators as a tool to classify different energy saving opportunities.

Introduction: Actual energy situation and it corresponding environmental problems. Solar energy: Solar thermal energy; Photovoltaic energy. Wind generation: Introduction; Wind resources; Wind energy farms; Environmental impacts. Hydro Energy: Hydro plants; Hydrological studies; Project criterions and cost evaluation; Environmental impacts. Geothermal energy: Geothermal projects; Main handsel kinds; Applications; Environmental impacts. Biomass energy: Evolution of the biomass projects; Main biomass resources; Urban waste treatment; Applications; Environmental impacts. Legal framework for renewable energies in Portugal: Technical and economic conditions inherent to the integration of renewable energy resources in the national electric grid. It is expected that in the end of the course the students should be able to: - Identify opportunities to use endogenous resources to generate energy; - Project energy generation systems using endogenous resources; - Evaluate, technically, renewable energy resources projects; - Perform technical/economic evaluation of renewable energy resources projects; - Implement some of the technologies studies during the course; - Know the energy consumption distribution among the different energy sectors; - Know the different etaps of an EA, their methodologies and goals; - Identify energy saving opportunities in different economic sectors; - Use economic indicators as a tool to classify different energy saving opportunities; - Acquire notions of management in the energy and CO2 emissions area;
