    This UC aims to provide the student with the following set of skills: - Identify opportunities to use endogenous resources to generate energy; - Project energy generation systems using endogenous resources; - Evaluate, technically, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects; - Perform technical/economic evaluation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects; - Know the energy consumption distribution among the different energy sectors; - Know the different etaps of an EA, their methodologies and goals; - Identify energy saving opportunities in different economic sectors;                     - Use economic indicators as a tool to classify different energy saving opportunities.

    Introduction: Actual energy situation and it corresponding environmental problems. Solar energy: Solar thermal energy; Photovoltaic energy. Wind generation: Introduction; Wind resources; Wind energy farms; Environmental impacts. Hydro Energy: Hydro plants; Hydrological studies; Project criterions and cost evaluation; Environmental impacts. Geothermal energy: Geothermal projects; Main handsel kinds; Applications; Environmental impacts. Biomass energy: Evolution of the biomass projects; Main biomass resources; Urban waste treatment; Applications; Environmental impacts. Legal framework for renewable energies in Portugal: Technical and economic conditions inherent to the integration of renewable energy resources in the national electric grid. Energy Audits: Goals; Phases and kinds of EA; Structure of na EA; Energy saving plans; Energy saving opportunities: Lighting; Driving force; Air conditioning; Compressed air; Energy management systems; CO2 European trade Emissions

    Objectives

    It is expected that in the end of the course the students should be able to: - Identify opportunities to use endogenous resources to generate energy; - Project energy generation systems using endogenous resources; - Evaluate, technically, renewable energy resources projects; - Perform technical/economic evaluation of renewable energy resources projects; - Implement some of the technologies studies during the course; - Know the energy consumption distribution among the different energy sectors; - Know the different etaps of an EA, their methodologies and goals; - Identify energy saving opportunities in different economic sectors;                     - Use economic indicators as a tool to classify different energy saving opportunities; - Acquire notions of management in the energy and CO2 emissions area;
