    - Political theory is consummated in "Political Science" as a discipline that studies the phenomena of power and the political organization of the community. - The modern form assumed by the theories about the organization of power is called "political ideologies", and reflect on the relationship between sovereignty, individual and society. - The purpose of this credit unit is to draw a historical plan of what were the various conceptions of power and their modern ordering in the two great contemporary ideological families, Liberalism and Socialism.

    1. The "History of Political Ideas" as a theory of power and state. 2. The state as a political organization of society. 3. The evolution of the western political order:      3.1. Classical Antiquity: Greece and Rome;      3.2. Middle Ages (476-1453):           3.2.1. The "Donation of Constantine";           3.2.2. Imperium, Sacerdotium and Regnum: the Bull "Duo Sunt" of Gelase I;         3.3. The Modern Age (1453-1789):           3.3.1. The decay of the medieval and feudal world;           3.3.2. The new "Status";           3.3.3. The theorists of the new sovereign State: Nicholas Machiavelli and Jean Bodin;           3.3.4. The affirmation of the Modern State in Portugal: the political theory of Álvaro Pais;     3.4. The Contemporary Age:          3.4.1. The three Atlantic Revolutions: English (1688/9); American (1776) and French (1789);          3.4.2. Liberal constitutionalism;          3.4.3. The birth of modern political ideologies: Anglo-Saxon and French Liberalism; Socialism.
