    This CU aims to provide a historical and critical analysis of bodily and sporting practices, from ancient civilizations to the present day. Its field of action covers the relationships between the body, education, culture and society, highlighting the political, pedagogical and institutional contexts that have shaped Physical Education and Sport. It works in the fields of the Social History of Education and the History of the Body and Movement, promoting a contextualized reading of contemporary practices. Its relevance in this EC lies in the training of professionals capable of basing their intervention on historical and cultural awareness, which will allow them to build holistic thinking about the different dimensions of sport, recognizing it as a social and educational phenomenon.

    CP1 From the theory of Physical Education to Sport Sciences. Culture and Sport: Conceptual structure of cultural dynamics; Sport as a cultural phenomenon. CP2- Ancient civilizations CP3 Classical Antiquity: From the Hellenic period to the Roman period. CP4 Middle Ages: Physical activities with functional characteristics. CP5Modern age. The Renaissance Movement and the positions of humanists in relation to corporal education. Illuminist Movement in affirming the importance of recreational-sports activities. CP6Physical Education and sport in the 19th and 20th centuries: Military currents; Hygienist chains; The pedagogical currents; Sport chains. CP7 The 20th century and the development and generalization of sport: From Gymnastics to the globalization of Sport CP8 Physical Education and sport in Portugal: Foreign influences on the development of Physical Education in Portugal. The teaching of Physical Education in Portugal. CP9 The Olympic movement in modernity

    Objectives

    LO1. Critically understand the concepts of Physical Education and Sports, using appropriate historical terminology. TM: Dialogue-based lectures and source analysis. LO2. Analyze stages in the history of Physical Education and Sports, relating them to their respective contexts. TM: Discussion of sources and group summaries. LO3. Interpret contemporary sports models in light of philosophical and ideological currents. TM:  Role-playing and practical problematization. LO4. Communicate acquired knowledge clearly and in a well-founded manner. TM Collaborative work and guided feedback. LO5. Critically reflect on past physical practices and their influence on modern sports. TM: Practical activities and tutorial support.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Several teaching methodologies will be used in the course: TM1: Dialogued lectures and critical analysis of historical sources (texts, images, videos), to explore the foundations of Physical Education and Sport, in conjunction with the Pedagogical Model. This option aims to promote: acquisition of a solid theoretical basis; historical thinking; appropriation of specific terminology. TM2: Group work using debates, role-playing, construction of mind maps and thematic summaries. This option aims to promote: critical analysis; cooperation; informed communication. TM3: Practical activities of historical interpretation of bodily practices and problematization of contemporary models. This option aims to promote: articulation between theory and practice; critical reflection; social contextualization. TM4: Continuous feedback (oral and written) and tutorial support. This option aims to promote: self-regulation of learning; educational success.
