Class Qualitative Research Methodology

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This C.U aims to promote theoretical and applied knowledge that enables students to plan, conduct, and analyze data in qualitative research with scientific rigor. It introduces the main approaches and techniques used in psychology's qualitative research (QR). It begins with exploring the paradigms underlying QR, highlighting the differences compared to quantitative research. The stages of the qualitative research process are covered, from formulating research questions, data collection - interviews, focus groups, and ethnography/participant observation, to qualitative analysis (QA) of the data. It explores 3 different QA methods - content analysis, thematic analysis, and grounded theory - with an emphasis on the procedures and application of each method. Quality assessment is discussed in each of the methods. At the same time, students learn how to use Nvivo software at QA.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

LO1: Recognize the framework and development of Qualitative Research (QI) in Psychology LO2: Know the procedures and demonstrate qualitative data collection skills in Psychology LO3: Know and understand the diversity of types of qualitative data analysis (QA) LO5: Select and apply different types of AQ according to research objectives/questions LO6: Implement the different research phases in a qualitative research work (IQ) to be carried out in the practical component of this UC LO7: Demonstrate skills in using data AQ software (Nvivo) LO8: Demonstrate the ability to ensure quality in IQ and write IQ papers using scientific language

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

Interactive exposition (MTL1), combining the expository method (MTL2) with predominantly active techniques (MTL3): demonstration of the content and procedures covered/modeling (MTL4), application exercises (MTL4), critical analysis of procedures (MTL5), and questioning (MTL6). In the practical component, the method is essentially active (MTL3), using the elaboration of a qualitative research project as a source of learning (Project-Based Learning) (IMTLP1). Learning is guided by the tasks they have to perform, simultaneously requiring them to apply the content covered and the procedures demonstrated and exemplified and to develop skills in analyzing and integrating information and working in groups.
