    This curricular unit appears in the 2nd semester of the 1st year of the Social Work degree and is focused on deepening knowledge about the main theoretical proposals in the context of family sociology that have been produced since the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth century until the most significant theories of the twentieth century and the recent theoretical contributions of the twenty-first century. The most decisive contemporary debates in the field of family relations are also identified.

    Sociology of the family: the perspective of the classics - the French Revolution, industrialization and changes in the family - Durkheim and the modern conjugal family. - Simmel, the sociology of the family and marriage - From institution to companionship: the proposal of Burgess. - Parsons and the American married family. The rupture of the 1970s - Marriage, family and domestic work - Social and sexual division of labour, gender and class The sociology of the family: theories from the end of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century - Family, social determinations, sex and gender - Marriage, homogamy and social mobility - Portuguese contributions: the family as a unit of analysis, identity, permanence and change From the crisis to the plasticity of the families: a permanent debate. - The persistence of the valorization of the family. - The affections at the centre; - Changes, tensions, old and new problems; - Trends and fundamental configurations at the national and international level.

    Objectives

    This course aims to: O1 - Recognize the importance of Sociology as a Social Science and working tool; O2 - Identify and relate how social issues have influenced scientific thought about the family; O3 - Characterize the family as a phenomenon produced/constructed and socially determined in space and time; O4 - Know the diversity of family structures O5 - Analyze the impact of intergenerational relations in the understanding of the family and its dynamics O6 - Critically analyze emerging issues of the study of the Family in current societies and its importance for the exercise of Social Work O7 - Understand the dynamics of social processes applied to the professional practice of Social Work; O8 - Identify strategies of intervention in the family.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The methodologies used are: - the exposition of the contents, completed with class discussion; - viewing and analysis of excerpts from films and documentaries; - analysis of scientific articles; - tutorial support for assignments.
