The curricular unit introduces to - some epistemological aspects as the construction of social reality, social problems and sociological problems, the plurality of Social Sciences/Interdisciplinarity; - the historical aspects and the development of scientific knowledge: from philosophy to Social Sciences; - it presents thinkers of the main sociological schools: Auguste Comte and Positivism, Emile Durkheim and Functionalism, Max Weber's constructivism, Karl Marx's historical and dialectical materialism, among others. - the theoretical perspectives of sociology as a basis of interpretation and intervention for the Social Work profession.

Objectives
Objectives
O1. Understand the main theoretical and methodological perspectives of sociological thought. O2. Comprehend social reality in the light of the contributions of different sociological theories, recognising that each theoretical matrix provides a different interpretation of the same social reality. O3. Develop an understanding that analysing social reality implies knowledge of scientific analyses, methodological and conceptual tools that underpin intervention.

The methodologies used are: - the exposition of the contents, completed with class discussion; - viewing and analysis of excerpts from films and documentaries; - analysis of scientific articles; - tutorial support for assignments.
