At the end of the course unit the students are expected to be able to: - Define and characterize the Welfare State in Portugal; - Actively intervene in the achievement of human rights through the knowledge of Social Policies and their relationship with Social Work; - Identify and characterize existing social policies, taking into account the different target audiences; - Understand, analyze, reflect and criticize the evolution and current trends of Social Policies.

Objectives
Objectives
O1 - To train for active and daily intervention in the conquest of human rights through Social Policies and their relationship with Social Work. O2 - To be able to read socio-economic and political indicators and how they relate to the Welfare State. O3 - Understand the emergence and development of the Welfare State. O4 - Identify the models of the Welfare State and how they relate to responses to citizens' needs. O5 - Understand the consequences of the "crisis" of the welfare state and the consequences for social work. O6 - Understand the Portuguese model of the "quasi" Welfare State, concrete measures articulated with the intervention and participation of Social Work. O7 - Understand, analyse, reflect on and criticise the evolution and current trends in social policies.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The teaching methods used will be expository and interrogative, and students will be asked to participate and reflect on the analysis of specific points in the syllabus, texts and the discussion of practical cases, with the aim of stimulating interest and critical thinking. Pedagogical Innovation Practices: students are challenged to take part in guided activities, using different pedagogical techniques such as role-play, group dynamics, brainstorming and problem-solving, making them more active and autonomous in their learning.
