Resume

I am an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University (Porto) and a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Education and Development (CeiED) since 2022. I was awarded a PhD in Educational Research from Lancaster University (UK) in 2012 for a thesis which performed a comparative analysis of the implementation of the Bologna Process in three European countries. Before my current employment, I worked as a researcher at the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), between 2017-2022, and as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES), with a scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology, between 2012-2017. However, my career in higher education started already before the PhD, in 2005, at the Higher Education Academy (UK), where I managed projects on teaching and learning improvement in higher education. I also worked as a research assistant at Lancaster University, during my PhD, on the evaluation of the quality enhancement framework in Scottish Higher Education. I have developed my research in the field of higher education policies, moving from a more general study of European higher education policies and their implementation (Bologna Process) to specific topics such as international student mobility, employability, quality assurance and inbreeding. I have participated as a research member in national and international projects, which were awarded public funding on a competitive basis, and in privately funded national studies on the above topics. International student mobility is my main research interest. I was the Principal Investigator (PI) in a project, funded by the Edulog – Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation, which mapped international students in Portugal and analysed international recruitment strategies. I also contributed as a research consultant to studies commissioned by national and international organisations, including the evaluation of the Erasmus+ programme 2014-2020 in Portugal, commissioned by the Erasmus+ National Agency. I am also a member of two COST Actions: European Network on International Student Mobility (Action CA20115) and Rising nationalisms, shifting geopolitics and the future of European higher education/research openness (Action CA22121). In the former, I have led the execution of two deliverables: a systematic literature review on the impact of Covid-19 on the integration of international students and a systematic literature review on global trends and patterns in international student mobility. Since January 2021, I have served as one of the Associate Editors of European Journal of Higher Education (peer-reviewed, indexed in Scopus and Emerging Sources Citation Index), which has implied managing the peer review for around 40 manuscripts per year. In 2024, I also joined the editorial team of Revista Lusófona de Educação, with broad distribution in Latin America. My research record is solid and extensive, with two co-authored books (one international and one national), 3 co-edited international books, 15 book chapters and 50 articles in reputed international peer-reviewed journals in the area of higher education, most of them indexed in Scopus and/or WoS. I have contributed to debates in the written media internationally (University World News and Times Higher Education) on current topics of public interest in higher education. Over the past five years, I have also engaged in mentoring young researchers and in coordinating research teams. I am a member of academic organisations such as CHER (Consortium of Higher Education Researchers) and IMISCOE (International Migration Research Network).
