    (1) Introduction to Contemporary China; (2) The Chinese Communist Party: the challenges of a new era; (3) China at the national level: tensions, obstacles and imbalances (4) The priorities and trends of the new Chinese Foreign Policy; (5) The Concept of Soft Power in China’s Perspective: evolution, characteristics and challenges; (6) The New Silk Road vs the Ancient Silk Road;  (7)  The role of Portugal and the Lusophone World in the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    1. Develop in students an understanding of the main changes brought about by China in the political, diplomatic, economic, social, cultural and military fields. 2. Contribute to a better understanding among students of the dynamics and challenges of contemporary China in the international relations, namely in its interaction with the main actors and international organizations. 3. Enable students to carry out a careful analysis of Chinese 'soft power' and the dilemmas of Chinese (re)emergence in the context of post-COVID shifting globalization.  
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Written work in the format of a scientific article accompanied by an oral presentation by the student followed by a debate between the lecturer and the rest of the students. The aim is to simulate the environment of a dissertation defence, with the student justifying his/her options, time frame, methodology and the added value of the work in relation to the existing literature.
