Juliana Cruz De Oliveira De Menezes

Resume

Dr Juliana Menezes is a Professor and Researcher at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lusófona University – Lisbon, since March 2025. She completed her PhD in Veterinary Science at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, in 2025. Dr Menezes holds a Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (2017), and a BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology from the NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (2015). She also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Laboratory Animal Science. As a Master's student, she participated in the clinical surveillance of Clostridium difficile at the National Institute of Health between 2016 and 2017. In 2018, she joined the international consortium PET-Risk, funded by the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR), which advanced understanding of antimicrobial resistance transfer dynamics between humans and companion animals. In 2020, she was awarded a national grant to undertake a PhD programme in Veterinary Biological and Biomedical Sciences, focusing on antimicrobial resistance in both companion animals and humans. During her PhD, Dr Menezes received several awards and distinctions at national and international scientific meetings for the quality of her research. She also secured competitive funding from the Research Centre of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon – CIISA, a Centre of Excellence in Portugal – to lead three research projects as Principal Investigator, under the One Health approach. Her doctoral research resulted in five publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed international journals as first author. Overall, Dr Menezes has 18 published papers, contributed to one book chapter, and has presented approximately 80 scientific communications (oral and poster) at national and international conferences. She is a regular peer reviewer for Q1 journals, including Veterinary Research Communications (IF: 2.1) and Scientific Reports (IF: 4.996), and was recently invited to serve as Guest Editor for special issues of the journal Antibiotics (IF: 4.9). She has taught in the Integrated Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine and the Postgraduate Programme in Veterinary Nursing at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In parallel, she has been actively involved in student mentoring, including supervision of MSc and PhD students. Her current research interests lie in understanding the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance and its implications for both human and animal health.
