Resume

Marta Esgalhado, PhD, MSc is a researcher at CBIOS - Lusófona's Research Center for Biosciences & Health Technologies and a faculty member in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Universidade Lusófona, Portugal. She is full member of the Portuguese Order of Nutritionists and holds a BSc in Nutritional Sciences from Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz (Portugal 2010), an MSc in Clinical Nutrition from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal, 2015), a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences from Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil, 2018), and a Postgraduate Diploma in General Management from Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics (Portugal, 2020). Her research initially focused on cardiovascular risk mitigation in chronic kidney disease patients, investigating the effects of dietary components on oxidative stress, inflammation, and gut microbiota composition. Over time, her research expanded to study dietary patterns and their systemic effects on cardiometabolic health. Currently, her work explores the impact of plant-based dietary models, particularly Vegetarian and Mediterranean diets, on body composition, metabolic markers, and cardiovascular risk. Marta has published 21 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals, with over 600 citations and an h-index of 11 (Scopus, February 2024). She has presented her research at numerous scientific conferences worldwide. In academia, she leads 6 CUs in the Nutrition Sciences bachelor’s program and has supervised 2 master’s and 2 bachelor’s students.
