Syllabus
1. Introduction to the Study of Microbiology: objectives, importance and applied microbiology; historical perspective 2. Systems of classification of living things 3. Microbial diversity. Viruses. Fungi, Algae and Protozoa 4. The bacterial cell: structure and morphology, growth and division. 5. Survival strategies of bacteria - communication, motility, multicellularity, programmed cell death and biocristalization. Biofilms: structure and relevance. 6. Microbial ecology: symbiotic relations. Pathogenicity and virulence determinants. 7. Microbial growth control: physical agents; chemical agents; antibiotics. Antimicrobial resistance. 8. Introduction to basic laboratory procedures in microbiology; growth and manipulation of microorganisms.

Objectives
1. Understand the role of microorganisms as part of the biosphere and other living beings. 2. Develop the capacity for critical analysis and understanding of microbiological phenomena. 3. Understand the relationship between the molecular biology of microorganisms, their characteristics and symbiotic relationships with other living beings. 4. Establish and predict growth control methods. 5. Be able to relate microbial ecology with different areas of application of microorganisms. 6. Use of theoretical knowledge in the experimental manipulation of microorganisms.
