    This course aims to assist in the understanding of the main ethical issues discussed in the areas of health, life sciences, and environmental and social sciences and humanities. The course aims to help students develop argumentative skills in the analysis of case studies such as the impact of new biotechnologies, euthanasia and end-of-life care, doctor-patient relations and public and global health, as well as how we live our lives in the context of political, socio-economic and environmental determinants. Expanding students' knowledge about these subjects, and their argumentative reasoning. Bioethics is an essential topic / discipline for the learning of those who are being trained as biologists, as these students may be exposed to all the above items during their training and the development of their professional careers.

    1. Introduction: Objectives and functioning of the UC. Presentation of the main topics currently discussed - Organ Donation; Vaccination Policies; Gestation / Procreation Policies; Informed Consent; Life / Death Law; Animal Rights: Zoos, Reserves (others); Bioethics in environmental contexts: Nature preservation and conservation; 2. Oral presentations and discussions: Ethics in the Use of Animals in Science and Education • Animal suffering and welfare • Animals in education and research • Zoos Ethics in Genetics • Research of the human genome and its application • Genetically modified organisms • Synthetic biology Environmental Ethics • Coexistence between Man and other natural resources • Main threats to natural ecosystems • Population management through hunting/exploitation Ethics and bioethics in Human Health • Human improvement • Childhood vaccination • Ethics early in life • Ethics at the end of life • Biobanks
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The course has as general objectives to train students in the following aspects: 1) identify the main ethical issues associated with the areas of medicine, health and life sciences, including ecological and environmental contexts; 2) to develop the skills of composing a well-founded argument, to be used as a support in making ethical decisions; 3) know, understand and apply the ethical principles of the Universal Declaration of Bioethics and Human Rights. Associated with these general objectives, it is also expected that the student: - recognize the implications of technological advances on issues associated with bioethics, and the correlation between them: - recognize the complexity of topics discussed in bioethics, and how they are managed by the participants (individuals and institutions); - identify concrete situations (case studies) that imply ethical evaluation; - explore bioethics issues looking for their legal framework in Portugal, and in other countries.
