    Theoretical Introduction to biological product separation and recovery processes Downstream processing concept: main steps and process sequence. Examples Cell breakage processes: chemical, physical and mechanical Solid-liquid separation processes: filtration, centrifugation, sedimentation, membrane processes. Liquid-liquid extraction and leaching processes. Chromatographic / Adsorption Processes Supercritical Extraction For each of the processes considered, the principles inherent to the separation method, the advantages and limitations and the equipment used are identified, and design basics are introduced. Practice Cellular disruption (chemical, physical and mechanical methods) over prokaryotes and eukaryotes for total protein recovery Carotenoid recovery from carrot through leaching Liquid-liquid extraction for salicylic acid recovery Gel filtration chromatography for protein extract separation Acetic acid adsorption on activated carbon

    Objectives

    Identify the key principle associated with each separation process and classify each process based on that principle. Relate the principle of the process with a property of the biomolecule that allows its differentiation from the others. Select the equipment associated with a given separation process for a type of equipment and know how to describe its operation. Design the equipment to meet the requirements of a given separation process. Combine various equipment to develop a methodology for biomolecule recovery and purification

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Use of active methodologies, in particular provision of material prior to the class through platforms such as Moodle, with basic guidance on the subject. The referred materials include videos, audios, infographics, among others. Later in class, students ask questions, discuss the subject and compare answers Presentation and discussion of case studies, problem solving, individually or in groups, to encourage interaction and group spirit Assessment Continuous Evaluation: P1 - weighted average of two components: average of 2 tests or global frequency performed in the semester (80%) + presentation of a seminar (20%): 60% of the final grade P2 - based on scientific report, behavior in class and discussion: 40% of the final grade. The minimum passing grade for P1 and P2 is 10 points. Exam If the student does not obtain approval by continuous assessment, the student can take an exam  with a minimum grade of 10 to pass
