Class Dimensioning of Structures

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This unit course addresses the fundamental concepts required for the design of concrete and steel building structures. Different technical topics related to the analysis and design of such structures are presented according to the actual Eurocodes. The latter concepts are fundamental for the education of a Civil Engineer and from a professional standpoint, both in the design/verification of structures or in the production field.

    Syllabus

Module 1 - Introduction to Design of Structures course. Module 2 - Analysis and Design Methods for Beam and Fungiform Slabs of Reinforced Concrete. Module 3 - Introduction to the Shores and Ties Method Applied to the Structures of Reinforced Concrete - Footings, Wall Beams, and Short Brackets. Module 4 - Basis of Project, Conception, and Modeling of Steel Structures. Module 5 - Analysis of Steel Structures. Module 6 - Design of Steel Structures: Tensile, Bending, Transverse Stress, and Torsion. Module 7 - Design of Bolted and Welded Steel Connections.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

Presentation of the principles and models for analysis and design of reinforced concrete elements and structural steel elements, according to the different limit states (Ultimate and Service). Analysis of the behavior of structural elements, i.e. column, beam, beam-column, from the point of view of material strength and stability. Students are also expected to be able to solve structural analysis and verification problems of reinforced concrete and steel elements. This should include the necessary safety checks, namely: (i) dimensioning of reinforced concrete slabs, (ii) dimensioning of reinforced concrete footings, (iii) dimensioning of wall beams and short reinforced concrete cantilevers, (iv) ) bases of design, conception, and modeling of steel structures, (v) analysis of steel structures, (vi) design of steel elements, (vi) design of bolted and welded steel connections.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

In the refered Curricular Unit, theoretical concepts will be linked with practical exercises. Collaboration among students and with the professor is encouraged during classes to work as a team in problem-solving. Students will be presented with topics and problems for the subsequent contextualization of the concepts. "Problem-Based Learning" (PBL) practices are highly valued in all classes of this specific Curricular Unit.
