Class Risk Mapping

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The curricular unit seeks to deepen and integrate knowledge acquired in previous units in the field of risk, its modelling, assessment and management, with a view to its spatial representation in a GIS platform and articulation with emergency planning processes.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

    1. Spatial and temporal risk analysis. Conceptual models in the risk theory. 2. Natural processes and risk cartography. 2.1. Mapping of meteorological hazards. Heat waves, cold spells and snowfall. 2.2. The water circulation processes and definition of flood areas. 2.3. Fluvial geomorphology and susceptibility map of flash flood and torrential processes. 2.4. Geomorphological processes and susceptibility. Cartography supported in statistically based models and physically based models. 3. Mapping vulnerability and risk mapping. Assessing the degree of loss and potential damage. 4. Evaluation of specific risk and total risk. 5. Study cases.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The objectives of the curricular unit are: 1. Become acquainted with several different hazard mapping methods; 2. Develop skills related to the identification of hazard areas; 3. Integrate information on the dynamics of the physical environment with hazard identification; 4. Risk mapping modelling in geographic information systems (GIS); 5. Introduce the risk problem in emergency planning.   At the end of the semester, the students are able to: 1. Know and apply several hazard mapping methods; 2. Develop skills related to the identification of hazard areas; 3. Relate the dynamics of the physical environment with hazard identification; 4. Understand the dynamics of physical environment, integrating it into geographic information systems (GIS); 5. Articulate hazards with emergency planning processes; 6. Produce hazard maps.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

METHODOLOGY: Classes consist of theoretical presentations which characterized themes and methodologies to develop and practical application exercises through cartographic production methods, based in GIS software. Exercises will be performed with different methodologies for risk mapping construction to various damaging processes. EVALUATION: Continuous assessment, with two written tests (25%+25%) and an interdisciplinary research work P2I (50%) involving other UC of the 3rd year. All elements of continuous assessment are compulsory.
