Syllabus
Mathematics for journalists. Critical analysis of numbers. Fundamental calculations: percentages and variations. Economic publications. Analysis of information. How the economy is measured. General concepts: production, employment and prices; the public accounts; relations with the outside world. GDP: concept, sources of information and news. Public accounts and the Fiscal Budget. Public revenue and expenditure. The State Budget. Public deficit and debt concepts. Unemployment and Inflation. Employment and unemployment. How it's measured: Statistics Employment Survey. Other sources of information. Prices: inflation and falling prices, causes and consequences. Information sources. Company accounts. Balance sheet and income statement. Financial markets. The equity and debt markets. Foreign exchange markets. Interest rates. The role of the ECB.

Objectives
Objectives
Students will learn the essential concepts to be able to understand the language used in macroeconomics, financial markets and companies in order to be able to comunicate in a simple but accurately language the data and information obtained from the economic, financial and business sources. It is intended that, with the acquired knowledge, the students interpret the language and the economic concepts to elaborate news about the economic conjuncture, the companies and the financial markets. They will also be able to detect errors of a technical nature in news and structure a work with several journalistic pieces.
