Class Fundamentals of Telecommunications

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This curricular unit, of the telecommunications field, is where the students first cross paths with the foundational concepts of communication theory, and its applications to analog and digital communication. Hence, knowledge of the previously lectured topics in Signals and Systems and Data Acquisition and Processing, are recommended. The skill set herein obtained are paramount for the design and development of data codification and compression algorithms (e.g., audio, video, text, etc.) as well as in other areas of communications and computer science.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

    1. Introduction. Model of a telecommunications system. 2. Random processes: analog sources and noise models. 3. Analog transmission systems: AM and FM. Band-pass noise. Performance of AM and FM systems in the presence of noise. 4. Digital conversion of analog sources, PCM. Quantization noise. 5. Model of a digital source. Concept of information and entropy. The source coding theorem. Huffman codes.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The main goal is to transmit to the students the basic concepts of telecommunications, as well as to introduce the main mathematical and computational tools needed for their treatment. The plan is to: - Present the basics of analog modulations, pulse modulation and source coding. In this way the students will be able to understand, develop and design analog communication systems. -  Develop a broad knowledge of concepts and principles of telecommunications, which permits the student to apply this knowledge to systems that are governed by the same principles.   - Acquire the capability to analyze and manipulate signals and LTI Systems, represented in both the time and frequency domain, using the Fourier Transform.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

Supply of a set of study material, in digital form, namely, slides and exercices. Use of simulation software.
