1. Public Opinion 1.1 What is public opinion and how can we study it? 1.2. Public Opinion Features; 2 . Surveys and Polls . 2.1 History. Development of the Field of Surveys and Polls in Portugal 2.2. Modalities. Steps in planning a survey and a poll 2.3 How to ask questions? 2.4 Sampling. Types of Error in Surveys; 3 Mini Lab of Data Analysis 3.1 Introduction to SPSS. How to build a database; 3.2 How to calculate means and frequencies of variables with standard deviations; 3.3. How to cross-reference variables (cross-reference tables, t-tests and ANOVA) 3.4. How to present survey data (preparation of tables and graphs, presentation of differences between groups); 4. Reports: how to prepare. 5. Mass Media and Polls. 6. Other opinion studies 6.1 Focus groups 6.2 Sentiment Analysis in social media.

Objectives
Objectives
This course aims to enable students to analyze, interpret and report an opinion poll, providing them with the theoretical and empirical bases to deal with the main themes of this discipline. In particular, students should be able to: 1) identify what public opinion is and what factors influence it; 2) understand how surveys are carried out and interpreted; 3) be able to statistically work opinion studies and select the most pertinent information. At the end of this course, students should be able to identify the main survey companies in Portugal, the modalities of surveys and types of sampling used, critically analyze opinion surveys, news that report surveys and prepare a survey report
