    This course provides an overview of fundamental theories and concepts that define the field of Community Psychology (CP) while incorporating real-life examples of community action and research. CP is a sub-field of psychology that is concerned with person-environment interactions and how society impacts individual and community functioning. It also explores the relationships between stressful environments, supportive social systems, and individual and social well-being. It emphasizes values, applied research, prevention programs, and action; all focused on promoting the welfare of the whole community, especially under-served populations. It focuses specifically on people´s strengths and competencies, not just their deficits and pathology, prevention, self-help, empowerment, and social support.

    Objectives

    LO1: To know and understand in context the origin of community psychology, its principles, and fundamental action values;  LOT2: Understand the emergence of community mental health and the deinstitutionalization movement, being able to discuss and reflect on their challenges and potentialities;  LOT3: To know the main concepts and theoretical approaches of community psychology by applying them appropriately to analyzing individual, organizational, and community problems. LO4: To identify prevention as an action pillar of community psychology, distinguishing the different levels of prevention and formulating distinctive action strategies adapted to each level.  LO5: To know community intervention projects and to identify, analyze and reflect on the community intervention principles presented in the projects analyzed.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    This curricular unit comprises theoretical-practical lectures and integrates various teaching methodologies (TM) such as expository moments (TM1), participatory discussions (TM2), viewing documentaries and news (TM3), preparation of observation methodologies for community intervention projects (TM4), experiential learning (TM5); oral presentation of group work (TM6) and feedback from the professor and peers (TM7). The teaching methodologies proposed and described integrate a set of pedagogical innovation practices based on evidence and adjusted to the objectives and contents of the course.
