    The curricular unit Social Work, Communication and Language is a unit integrated in the 1st year of the degree in Social Work and aims to situate communication as a transversal instrument in the field of social interaction for the construction of professional relationships in Social Work. This curricular unit aims to introduce the student to the theoretical and practical issues of communication and language, an indispensable tool for the human condition, and a fundamental competence for the social worker.

    I. Communication 1.1. Communication as the foundation of social life: main theories; 1.2. Bases of the communication process: the professional dimension. II. Communication Process 2.1. Interpersonal communication, face-to-face, individual and collective, institutional and mass communication; 2.2. Elements of communication; 2.3. Context, means, and techniques; 2.4. Feedback; 2.5. Verbal and nonverbal communication. III. Image and Language in the Communication Process 3.1. Language and linguistics; 3.2. Types of language; 3.3. The role of color and format in message configuration; 3.4. The power of language and the language of power; 3.5. Proximity and distancing: the language of space. IV. Communication and Social Work 4.1. The particularities of communication in the intervention process and in the construction of the professional relationship; 4.2. Active listening: active listening; 4.3. Language adequacy in different contexts  
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    O1. Understanding the fundamentals of communication as a fundamental and constitutive dimension of the human condition; O2. Developing effective communication skills in the domains of face-to-face, institutional, and broader public relations; O3. Understanding communication as a tool for work in the interaction of Social Services in institutional contexts and relation to the subjects of action; O4. Studying language and discursive strategy as support for professional relationships in different social intervention contexts; O5. Understanding the role and power of different elements of communication (actors) and the influence of cultural and social values and differences; O6. Knowing how to structure and present spoken and written communication according to target audiences and develop discursive and argumentative capacity and their potentialities in a communication process.
