Class History of Architecture 4.1

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This curricular unit will focus on Portuguese architectural production, particularly the history of the modern movement reception in Portugal and the subsequent transformations up to the present day. The subject of the History of Portuguese Architecture (Modern, we might add) can only be understood by placing its problems in context without, however, neglecting the international panorama. The programme traces the transition from the end of the 19th century, when the Beax-Arts influence was felt in the works and teaching of architecture, through the Problem of the Portuguese House, the Inquiry into Popular Architecture and the debate between schools of architecture, namely in the exhibition After Modernism, key moments in a context that was apparently hostile to the entry of the modern movement into Portugal.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

Reading architecture and placing works in their historical context is one of the main objectives of the subject. The systematisation of knowledge, considering the various sources, with the bases of study being (in the practical component) mainly those bequeathed by historians, whose knowledge and scientific methods remain indispensable. The representation through drawing, a privileged and precise instrument in its synthesis, to analyse and show works and their problems. To establish links with the design process in the Project IV Curricular Unit and understand the relevance and operability of history, particularly Portuguese history.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

In the HAP1 Curricular Unit, students carry out an assignment that involves an in-depth study of an architectural theme/place from the modern period chosen for the academic year in question. Students are offered a reflective and detailed reading of the various aspects of Portuguese architecture in this place, trying to complement the generalised view of the theoretical subject in practice.
