Class Pharmacokinetics

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Pharmacokinetics is the science that studies the factors that influence the kinetics of drug absorption, distribution, metabolization and excretion. Pharmacokinetics are often presented as "what the body does with a drug". The pharmacokinetics of a drug depends on several factors related both to the physicochemical properties of the drug and the medication, and to patient-related properties (sex, age, kidney function, liver function, genetic polymorphisms ...). The knowledge of pharmacokinetic principles is essential for prescribers to make the necessary dosage adjustments quickly and accurately. Thus, this curricular unit is essential for the training of pharmacists, since these are the specialists in medicines.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

Biological organisms behave as open systems in relation to xenobiotic substances, which include most drugs. Thus, the characterization of drug variations over time - the kinetics of drugs - is an important tool in the context of drug therapy. In this curricular unit, it is intended to address the fundamentals of Pharmacokinetics, focusing on practical applications to specific cases.   After attendance and approval of the Curricular Unit, it is intended that the student has acquired knowledge, skills and competences to: - predict the pharmacological effects of a drug based on mechanistic pharmacokinetic models; - discern the types of pharmacokinetic models, their advantages and disadvantages; - adapt dosing schedules to special populations and specific clinical situations; - be able to monitor therapy, by determining pharmacokinetic parameters and establishing individualized dosing regimens.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The UC has theoretical and theoretical-practical classes. The theoretical classes are magisterial encompassing the syllabus and the curricular unit's objectives, with stimulation of the active participation of students based on the use of interactive software, such as mentimeter, kahoot and kialo. Theoretical-practical classes deepen the content taught in the theoretical component, focusing on problem solving. Students will also be challenged to solve group clinical cases to get in touch with the reality of the pharmaceutical profession.
