International rules on zoological nomenclature. Concepts related to parasitism. Parasite-host relationship, ecology, and evolutionary aspects of parasites.

    Objectives

    To learn about taxonomy, morphology, biology, epidemiology of the main nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, acanthocephala, protozoa, insects and arachnids of medical-veterinary importance and public health; the relationships with domestic, wild, aquatic animals and Man as the aetiological base for the student preparation to other scientific subareas such as Pathology and Clinics of Parasitic Diseases, Clinics and Animal Health, Food Safety and Public Health. Development of skills to collect, preserve and identify samples.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Expositive lectures using audio-visual means. The assessment methodology follows the rules present on the ULusófona regulation concerning knowledge assessment. The theoretical component has a weight of 50% in the the final grade. The student is approved in the theoretical assessment with a minimum of 9,5 values out of 20. Practical classes are laboratorial ones, through macroscopic and microscopic observation of specimens and research of information in scientific articles, in the context of supervised self-learning. Theoretical assessment is carried out through two written exams. Continuous practical assessment is carried out with two exams about practical lessons (60%) and by the presentation of a work group (40%). The practical component has weight of 50% in the final classification. The student is approved in the continuous practical assessment with a minimum of 9,5 values out of 20.
