Objectives
Objectives
At the end of this Course Unit (UC) the student should understand the concepts of cryobiology, namely the rationale for the use of permeant and non-permeant cryoprotectants and apply the knowledge acquired in understanding cryopreservation protocols. Students should also be able to understand the importance of the cryopreservation program in the dynamics of the assisted reproduction laboratory. At a practical level, the student should employ gamete and embryo manipulation techniques, acquired throughout the other curricular units, to the cryopreservation of gametes and embryos.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The master in Embryology and Human Reproduction has a theorical component, given in modules by guests specialized in the subjects of each module, among which are clinician, embryologists, national and international clinical directors of assisted reproductive (ART) centers, and/or representatives of Portuguese and European societies. Each teacher is asked to select a few scientific papers and/or clinical cases related to the subject they’ve teach so the students can prepare presentations and discussion of those, in the final evaluation of the module. Students are, this way, familiarized with discussion and interpretation of scientific papers and/or clinical cases as in the clinical environment. The practical component is given in the embryology laboratory of this University. Student practice all the techniques of in vitro fertilization (using animal models), in an environment identical to the clinical one.
