    Although this is an optional course, it is important given the current situation. The aim is to look at left-wing and right-wing populist phenomena, both historically and in contemporary times, as well as to focus on and study the phenomenon of the sub-type of populism known as Religious Populism. It will also take into account the use of symbolism, discourse, imagery and deep feelings of a religious nature in the populace in order to pursue political objectives by populist political leaders.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    At the end of the semester: a) Students should be able to recognise the populist phenomenon, in a political or religious context or in their intersections. b) They should be able to identify the characteristics of a populist leader, as well as the broad lines that typify populist activity and discourse, both in the political sphere and in the strictly religious spectrum.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Watching short films (or parts of films) in class in order to identify types of populist discourse and practice, both in the political and religious spheres. The same applies to other media such as books or newspaper articles, for example. Students will be asked to keep an eye out during the weekly break in classes for material on the populist phenomenon for discussion in class.
