Class Composing and Designing Urban Space

In this CU the students will contact with theories and practices of urban design (public space). It´s one of the main curricular units and allows the understanding of spatial and functional relations and the offer of conditions to a qualified life of communities. It¿s integrated on Applied Urbanism and Urban Design area and is one of the bases on urbanism formation.

1. Organizational model, relations and hierarchies of space. Principles of spatial order. Primary elements: axis, point, line and volume. The transformation of space. 2. Elaboration of design projects based on real situations. Definition of scope, local analysis, fieldwork. project elements and legal framework. 3. Urban design project: spatial organization. Integration of networks. 4. Prospective exercises focusing on different concerns in the field of urban sociology and environment.

The preparation of a transversal work, common to most of the curricular units, which contains the particularities of each UC, is a practice that promotes a specific understanding of the subjects specific to each UC and knowledge of their relationships in the context of work in urban planning, preparing the student to solve complex problems. Seminar classes, where different topics are addressed in a coordinated manner by different lecturers, allow for a broader approach and the consolidation of more comprehensive knowledge in the fulfilment of the course programme.
