On 27 May, Tiago Monteiro, a student studying Biotechnology at Lusófona University and a member of the board of the Eco-Schools Faculty of Engineering, took part in one of the biggest underwater clean-up campaigns ever held. The event, attended by 842 divers, set a new record by collecting around 3 tonnes of marine waste in just 24 hours. Among the items removed were ropes, plastic and glass bottles and disposable masks.
Tiago Monteiro, who proudly wore the Lusófona University Faculty of Engineering and FE Eco-Schools jersey, left an important message about conserving our seas:
“As a diver, I feel obliged to collect any waste I find. However, these actions are essential to show that if we don't choose to save the ocean, we are choosing to jeopardise life on our planet, our home.”
Tiago Monteiro's participation in this campaign emphasises the importance of collective action in protecting our seas and improving water quality.
