1. Civil Engineering: introduction; historical evolution, in Portugal and in the world. 2. The traditional areas of practice of the civil engineering career and the respective competences: structures; civil constructions; hydraulics; geotechnics; roadways and railways; territory planning; construction materials and processes. 3. Professional Councils. 4. Professional Ethics and Deontology. 5. Other skills in the field of Civil Engineering: management and transport; operational investigation; safety and hygiene at the work. 6. Seismic Engineering. 7. The Rehabilitation of Infrastructure and Buildings. 8. Research in the context of Civil Engineering.

Objectives
Contribute to the understanding of Civil Engineering, emphasizing its wide area of applications. Contribute to the understanding of the evolution of Civil Engineering over time. To transmit the importance of Civil Engineering in society. Discuss the duties and responsibilities inherent to the profession. Present and discuss, even in a broad and general perspective, some relevant issues in the context of this profession.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Debate, between teachers and students, on the different issues involved is encouraged. Students have the possibility of visiting a construction site (in progress) and attending (participating) in several lectures by experts from different areas of Civil Engineering.
