    Geospatial information is fundamental to the development of the activity of a civil protection engineer. In this context, it is intended that competences in this area of knowledge, geographic information systems, with regard to the acquisition, creation, manipulation, storage of geographic data be acquired, and may be applicable to various areas of intervention such as land use, land management. water resources, infrastructure management, terrain analysis, territory planning, natural and anthropogenic risk management, among others.

    Cartography: Map elements, cartographic referencing systems. Introduction to GIS: a) Fundamental concepts; b) Structure of geographic information in a GIS; c) History and main areas of application (the example of Civil Protection); d) Resources and sources of information for GIS. QGIS software - structure and main applications; naming rules, organisation/management of information. GIS data models - Vector, Raster and Tabular. Creating, acquiring and editing vector information; non-topological and topological models; geographic databases. Coordinate systems and georeferencing. Tabular data manipulation (Selection by attributes and location, join and relate, calculation). Geoprocessing (Clip, Dissolve, Merge, Buffer, Intersect, Append). Raster model operations; interpolation. Symbology and information representation methods. Layouts

    Objectives

    The aim of the Curricular Unit is understanding the concept of Geographic Information System (GIS), recognizing the several types of spatial data structures and treatment inherent to each type. Since in GIS the relationship between the processes information are fundamental, will be given special attention to georeferencing process (coordinate systems ¿ global and national). The creation of data models, geodatabases, the construction projects in QGIS and exploitation of its potential in terms of functionality relationship, index calculation and handle are other goals. It will also be given attention to the final presentation of maps produced from the design of layouts. At the end of the Curricular Unit the student must have the ability to use the basic functions of a GIS and design a project in GIS environment, finding solutions to problems encountered in its implementation.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The teaching methodology consists of a presentation to the students using PowerPoint, demos and case studies in GIS (QGIS / ArcGIS), using data/information available on the web (DGTerritório, IGEOE, APA, etc.) followed by resolution practical exercises. The continuous assessment will have the following components: Two (2) theoretical-Practical tests, corresponding to 60% of the final grade. GIS Project and Report 40% of the final grade. The appeal exam consists of a theoretical-practical test, the practical component being still composed of 1 GIS project and respective report similar in degree of difficulty and complexity to the GIS Project carried out within the scope of continuous assessment.
