Class Geographic Information Systems

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This course aims to equip students with essential skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), focusing on georeferencing, spatial data modeling and analysis, practical application using QGIS, and thematic cartography production. Emphasis is placed on solving real-world problems within the context of Civil Protection.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The aim of the Curricular Unit is understanding the concept of Geographic Information System (GIS), recognizing the several types of spatial data structures and treatment inherent to each type. Since in GIS the relationship between the processes information are fundamental, will be given special attention to georeferencing process (coordinate systems ¿ global and national). The creation of data models, geodatabases, the construction projects in QGIS and exploitation of its potential in terms of functionality relationship, index calculation and handle are other goals. It will also be given attention to the final presentation of maps produced from the design of layouts. At the end of the Curricular Unit the student must have the ability to use the basic functions of a GIS and design a project in GIS environment, finding solutions to problems encountered in its implementation.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The teaching methodology combines theoretical-practical lectures supported by PowerPoint presentations and complementary bibliography, step-by-step demonstrations, and case studies in a GIS environment (QGIS). Theoretical topics are covered in the initial stages, while operational ones are addressed later, along with exercises using open data sources (DGT, IGEOE, APA). The final assessment consists of a QGIS project that integrates the course content, allowing students to apply the knowledge acquired. A written report is submitted and discussed with the instructor. Tutorial sessions provide individual support for students’ daily work and study.
