In this Unit are presented topics on Engineering sciences applied to water and effluent treatment processes and advanced Engineering information about water and effluent treatment technologies. Future graduates can apply the knowledge acquired in this curricular unit in the operation of WTPs and WWTPs and in the design of different treatment processes. It is a fundamental curricular unit in any Environmental Engineering program

Water and Wastewater Characteristics of water and wastewater. WTPs and WWTPs. Water and wastewater treatment systems. Fundamentals of biological / physical-chemical water and wastewater treatment systems. Preliminary treatment Coarse and fine screening, grit removal, degreasing Physico-chemical treatment Mixing, coagulation and flocculation Clarification/sedimentation, flotation and filtration Advanced treatment Adsorption Membrane separation Biological treatment Activated sludge Trickling beds Anaerobic digestion processes Nutrients removal Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus

Objectives
Objectives
Acquisition of knowledge on contamination sources of surface and groundwater and on physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of water and wastewater. Awareness of the politics of 4 Rs for the protection of the environment:: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover Acquisition of advanced knowledge in Engineering, regarding water and wastewater treatment, directed to the design and operation of treatment plants. Acquisition of basic knowledge on: Conception, design, implementation and operation of water and wastewater treatment systems; Process integration; Sludge management.
