This curricular unit is core in the course syllabus, as it aims to build a deep view of the historical evolution of the European Project, fostering a better understanding of the functioning of the European Union, through a historical analysis of the Community Treaties, either in terms of economic construction in the context of the political construction of the European Union. This knowledge allows the student to be able to critically analyze the European project and be prepared for the Curricular Units that will be held in the following years of the Course.

1. From the idea of Europe to the European project. 2. Theorizing European integration. 3. Europe after World War II: the search for unity and cooperation. 4. The founding fathers of Europe. 5. The foundations of Europe of integration: the Treaty of Paris. 6. The European Defense Community and the European Political Community: the federalist illusion. 7. The Community Way: The Treaties of Rome. 8. The 1970s: the decade of stagnation for European integration? 9. The Single Market: Paving the way for a neo-liberal project? 10. The economic and political construction of the Union: the Maastricht Treaty. 11. The road to Amsterdam: a flexible Europe? 12. The enlargements of the Union and the challenges of the great European enlargement: cohesion or dilution? 13. The Treaty of Lisbon: strengthening the Union. 14. Future prospects for Europe: the need for Europe and the necessary Europe.

Objectives
Objectives
Provide a thorough insight into the historical evolution of the European Project. Provide knowledge that allows to know how to contextualize the evolution of the construction of the European Union in the theories of integration. To facilitate the understanding of the functioning of the European Communities over the decades until they became the current European Union, understanding the various reforms that the Community Treaties have been going through and, consequently, the evolution of the economic and political construction of the European Union. Understand the strengths and challenges that have arisen and still stand for the construction of the European Union.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
Written work in the format of a scientific article accompanied by an oral presentation by the student followed by a debate between the lecturer and the rest of the students. The aim is to simulate the environment of a dissertation defence, with the student justifying his/her options, time frame, methodology and the added value of the work in relation to the existing literature.
