This CU provides an analysis of the protection of human rights, both internationally and nationally. It presents the sources, categories, content, regime and limits of human rights, as well as the obligations of States within the framework of the main implementation mecahisms provided for in both international and domestic law.

Syllabus
Part I: human rights at the international level 1. Overview of the internationalization process of human rights. 2. Classification of human rights. 3. Regional protection systems: European, Interamerican and African. 4.The universal protection system: human rights treaty mechanisms and the UN Charter system. Part II: fundamental rights at the domestic level 1. Fundamental rights in the 1976 Portuguese Constitution and their dual nature: subjective and objective. 2. The numerus apertus clause of article 16, paragraph 1, of the Portuguese Constitution. 3. Structure and types of fundamental subjective rights: rights, freedom and guarantees vs. social rights. 4. The legal regime of fundamental rights. 5. The limits of fundamental rights.

Objectives
Objectives
To acquire a solid knowledge of human rights as a legal system and intellectual and political discourse. To be able to compare the different stages of the evolution of the recognition of human rights, as well as the various protection mechanisms. To have the necessary skills to invoke in court any violation of human rights or to enforce respect for them within the scope of their professional activity.
