    The course presents the aging phenomenon in contemporary society, focusing on its specificities in Portugal. It addresses aspects of geriatrics and gerontology, understanding aging as a process that can be active and encouraging students to engage with diverse realities such as Nursing Homes and Day Care Centers, among other forms of elderly care. It also presents the Social Work approaches to the phenomenon.

    1. Demographic Evolution and Population Aging: Key Challenges and Conceptual Approaches; 2. Aging and Old Age: (Meanings of Aging; Theories and Models, Individual Aging); 3. Systems of Protection in Old Age: State, Institutions, and Family; 4. Health and Well-being in Old Age (Quality of Life in the Elderly, Functional Capacity, Rehabilitation and Psychosocial Intervention in Dependency Situations, Autonomy, Environment); 5. Building New Forms of Sociability in the Aging Process and Old Age (Interpersonal Networks, Support and Neighborhood Relationships, Participation and Best Practices); 6. Gerontological Social Work - Role and Professional Practices.

    Objectives

    The objectives of the curriculum unit are: O1. Acquire, integrate, and master the elementary and necessary knowledge for a comprehensive understanding of the process of human aging; O2. Analyze the differences between normal and pathological aging, paying attention to the impacts of disability and disease processes on different aspects of people's lives; O3. Understand Systems of Protection in old age; O4. Understand intervention in old age within the scope of Health and Well-being; O5. Learn about new forms of sociability in the Aging and Elderly process; O6. Understand the intervention of Gerontological Social Work in different contexts such as institutions and/or the community.
