    The Research Methods in Neuropsychology course allows students to explore practical procedures related to data collection and interpretation in a research method commonly used in neuropsychology (to be defined by the teacher and the student and available at the HEI-LAB - Centro Universitário do Porto). Thus, the practical component is based on a Nervous System measurement technique, allowing students to explore in depth a research technique, research questions, and associated procedures.

    S1: Fundamentals of Research Design in Neuropsychology - Neuropsychology as a science - Main types of studies: descriptive (case studies, case series, etc), observational analytical (cross-sectional, cohorts, etc) and intervention analytical (experimental, quasi-experimental, etc) S2. Nervous System Measurement - Central Nervous System measurements (magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, event related potentials, functional near infrared spectroscopy) - Peripheral Nervous System Measurements (Electrocardiography, Electrodermography, Eye-tracking) S3. Laboratory Practice - Rules and principles of data collection in laboratory - Experimental Tasks - Data acquisition

    Objectives

    LO1. Know and compare the main study designs and research methods in the field of clinical neuropsychology LO2. Acquire an overview of the various research methods in neuropsychology according to the different levels of measurement of the nervous system (central and peripheral) and discuss their potential vs. limitations. LO3. Explore practical procedures related to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data referring to one research method in neuropsychology

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The articulation of the teaching methodologies of the curricular unit with pedagogical model of the SC can be observed by the combination of several evidence-based pedagogical methods in higher education. Thus, the synergy between theoretical and practical teaching methods will be promoted, with a special focus on promoting active and autonomous learning of students throughout the entire process. in the theoretical-practical classes, the expositive method with support of audiovisual materials (ME1) will be combined with interactive dialogue and debate on previously developed studies (ME2), fostering the active intervention and critical reflection of students throughout the process of acquiring knowledge about study designs and research methods in neuropsychology.  the laboratory component of the course will consist of carrying out practical exercises (applied training, ME3) related to data acquisition
