This Subject intends to function as a theoretical and practical introduction to the exercise of journalism, providing an overview of the contexts (social and organizational) of the profession and the requirements (technical and human) required of professionals. Basic notions about the specificity of journalistic writing and its techniques, accompanied by the development of practical work throughout the semester. Students will also be motivated to perform a critical reading of media/information platforms, comparing the criteria of newsworthiness and the diversity or convergence of angles of approach to events, narrative structures, sources of information and respective attribution, titles, illustration (photographs, infographics), among other aspects.

Objectives
By the end of the module, students should know the nature of journalism as a social phenomenon, the specific nature of the journalistic profession, the production routines, the organisation and functioning of the newsroom, the diversity of the media and the consequent differences in the ways of being a journalist and the conditioned context in which the practice of the profession takes place. At the same time, during practical classes, students will be introduced to journalistic writing, applying journalistic rules and criteria in news writing. Students will also be motivated to carry out a critical reading of media/information platforms, comparing the criteria of newsworthiness and the diversity or convergence of angles of approach to events, narrative structures, sources of information and their attribution, headlines, illustration (photographs, infographics), among other aspects.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Practical writing work, simulating a real labour context. This will be carried out in working groups and the results will be handed in during the school term. Articulation with the Computational Thinking Curricular Unit, thus promoting the application, in a real context, of an integration of graphic content within the scope of news writing, thus allowing work on the news from a global viewpoint.
