Class Composition and Lighting

    Presentation

The Composition and Lighting Curricular Unit intends to initiate familiarization with the studio environment and all its components, creating work methods, individually or in groups, with the aim of better understanding artificial lighting. Among its golds are: Developing the ability to observe and identify the photographic variables necessary to take a photograph; promoting the pre-visualization and developing the skills of pre-production and production of a particular photograph; understand and applying basic principles of composition, namely the adaptation of lenses focal lengths  to precise objectives, the visualization of objects and people, analyzing the images according to their effect on the observer. Understanding photographic composition as an operation on a two-dimensional plane (with a suggestion of three-dimensionality) and learn to work with the structural elements of visual language.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

Understanding the language of photographic composition and the visual components that create meaning in a photograph. Ability to use this language in the creation of images. Capacity of theoretical analysis of an image in its lighting characteristics, identifying the type of light and other accessories used. Knowledge of different types of light modelers, as well as electronic studio lighting (Flash). Ability to work in the studio, in groups and dividing skills, handling light modelers, tripods, giraffes, generator blocks, photometers, and other accessories for working in the studio. Photometry and image capture in digital format.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The integration of historical information that allows viewing photographic composition as a result of culture incorporates an innovative character in the teaching of photographic composition as an integrated idea, denying any notion of production recipes. This idea is being forwarded from texts and presentations, starting from the inversion of roles. Students must present ideas based on referenced information and their own research, and the teacher must then present the main ideas, pointing out the correct notions presented and correcting the wrong ones, enhancing the students' understanding. Lighting is taught from studio work, enhancing the understanding and perception of the use of the entire studio apparatus.
