This Curricular Unit aims to: Provide knowledge of the various current perspectives on various topics in the field of family and gender sociology and their broad relationship with the various branches of knowledge of sociology; Contribute to the notion of the social and cultural character of the different modalities of family, marital and parental relations and their relationship with various institutions, namely the State; Provide knowledge of the relationships that are established between the main processes of social organization and the changes observed over time in families and the social attributions of gender roles within the family and society; To allow the knowledge of the relationship between the different contents of the UC and the evolution of society, always having as objective the relationship of each of the themes worked with the various policies (of diverse nature) implemented in Portugal and in Europe.

Scientific knowledge about the family; Family, social representations and common sense; Family theories: from classics to contemporaries: The perspective of the classics. The rupture of the 70s; Late century theories and proposals XX to the beginning of century. XXI; The sociology of the century family XXI The family in the past and in contemporary societies, Demographic indicators in Portugal; Social change and family dynamics; Family and aging; Concepts of gender identity and role; Gender and Society in Portugal; The dark side of the family: domestic violence Gender change and continuity in the Portuguese and European context; State and Public Policy; Family, Economy and Work; Public agenda, political agenda and private order; Public policies and social change in Portugal and Europe; Family, social policies in Portugal and Europe.

Objectives
It is intended that students: Obtain theoretical knowledge of family and gender sociology; Develop a sociological look at families, changes over time, diversity and complexity; Acquire knowledge of diverse perspectives on current issues and debates within the sociology of family and gender in contemporary societies; Understand the social and cultural character of the different modalities of family, marital and parental relations; Understand the notion of the relationships that are established between the main processes of social organization and the changes in families and social attributions of gender roles in the family and in society.
