Class Contemporary Tourism

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Tourism has played a central role in globalisation, allowing us to reflect on issues such as identity and heritage, historical and cultural representation, authenticity and ownership, neoliberalism, inequality, gender relations, among others. In this course we will explore different forms of tourism, including creative tourism, digital nomads and festival tourism. Throughout the semester we'll consider issues such as the gaze, authenticity, identity, consumption, ritual and pilgrimage. This course presents tourism as a relevant field for contemporary anthropological research, from the emergence of the 'anthropology of tourism' as a subfield in the 1970s to the major theoretical debates of today.
