Class Urban Design II

The approach in this curricular unit will have contemporaneity as a framework and will seek both through theory and project practice to bring to the student path an increased sensitivity for the analysis, understanding, and action on the problems that urban space / public space represents.

In the practical aspect, an urban section of the city of Lisbon will be selected, which should include an intervention/rehabilitation proposal, with a view to closing the grids and completing the urban form. On effective and complex territories, strategies should be developed that synthesize knowledge and intuitions in an applied way. In the theoretical aspect, the need to understand the identity of the urban space will be addressed, through the study of its different components and its diverse constituent elements, its importance in the development of cities as complex events, as well as the profound implications of their configuration. Election of analysis methodologies that allow the student to observe, analyze and reflect urban realities and their spaces.

The general assessment criteria result from a combination of continuous assessment (20%), which includes attendance, assertiveness, elaboration, and evolution of exercises carried out in class and/or reports on the topics covered in class and/or on study visits; 3 group assignments (50%); 3 individual work evaluations (30%). The specific evaluation criteria for the exercises vary according to the specific objectives of the proposed statements and are based on the level of elaboration, the quality of the analysis developed and the capacity for critical reflection, based on the knowledge acquired and experienced. The evaluation of the final proposal of the work developed must be considered in complementarity with the continuous evaluation throughout the semester and in the previous interim evaluation phases. It is a mandatory condition for validation of the discipline the presence in at least 70% of the classes taught. Exceptions are made for students with student worker status.
