By the end of the semester this curricular unit will teach students to use correctly utilize medical terminology allowing for correct descriptions of clinical signs and symptoms to their peers, Professors and Veterinarians. Students will learn how to complete a full clinical history and examination, evaluate the condition of dogs and cats to be able to identify signs of disease. During the course of the curricular unit, students will learn how to select specific complimentary exams to facilitate diagnoses and treatment. The student will also learn about basic concepts about hospital routine and routine procedures in a hospital. In this way this curricular unit represents the foundation on which students will build their capacity for clinical reasoning throughout their MIMV education, in addition to preparing them so that they are able to begin hospital practices.

1. Anamnesis, General health examination and Semiology of the lymphatic system. a. Clinical reasoning, anamnesis. General health examination. ¿¿ 2. Digestive semiology a. Clinical signs. Directed physical examination, laboratory and imaging tests 3. Respiratory semiology a. Clinical signs. Movements and lung auscultation. Complementary diagnostic tests. ¿ 4. Cardiovascular semiology a. Clinical signs, pulse, blood pressure, heart sounds, murmurs. Electrocardiography. 5. Semiology of the locomotor and neurological systems a. Changes in posture and gait, tests to locate the lesion, diagnostic methods. 6. Semiology of the urinary, reproductive, endocrine and dermatological systems. a. clinical signs, main diseases and injuries, associated laboratory tests. 7. Semiology of the ophthalmological system a. Ophthalmoscopy. Main diseases. Tonometry, Shirmer test and fluorescein.

Objectives
Objectives
For the dog and cat, by the end of the curricular unit, students will be able to: understand and correctly utilize medical terminology; complete all parts of the basic clinical examination, including a complete history; complete the clinical exploration of the lymphatic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, locomotive, urinary, endocrine, ophthalmological and reproductive systems; understand and recognize the clinical signs of disease within the various systems; compile lists of problems base on the history and clinical examination of the patient and the location of the lesion and/or organ system effected; identify appropriate complimentary exams to arrive at a diagnosis; interpret and correlate the results of each complementary exam with the clinical situation of the patient. The student must also have knowledge of basic hospital procedures and care for critical patients.

Practical evaluation: The student will have an individual grade in each class in the continuous assessment taking into account attendance, participation and response to questions asked in each class. At the end of the semester, the average of these grades will make up 40% of the final grade. At the end of the course there will be a demonstrative oral practical assessment (60%). Approval of the practical assessment is obtained with a minimum of 9.5 points. Theoretical evaluation: 2 mid-terms evaluating subject matter presented during theoretical classes. The final grade will be given by the average of the 2 evaluation forms. Approval of the theoretical assessment is obtained with a minimum of 9.5 points. Evaluation through final examination: The final grade obtained in this case will be an average of theoretical (50%) and practical (50%) components of the curricular unit.
